As you may know, addiction is a big problem in the world today. Addiction can come in many forms; affect different people to create more problems for them. Illegal drugs, pharmaceutical drugs, shopping, gambling, gaming, and alcohol are just some of the things that people can get addicted to. Addiction, no matter what form can affect any system in your body, altering balance and developing diseases in you.
Lungs
Tobacco addiction or anything taken through inhalation can cause respiratory diseases if unchecked. The most common example of course is tobacco smoking where hundreds of chemicals affect the lungs of a person that can cause lung cancer, tuberculosis, and other more. Toxic chemicals are spread throughout the body through inhalants and can affect the other organs too.
Heart
The heart is one of, if not the most important part of the body and without it naturally working, live would not be too possible. Abuse of stimulants and street drugs such as cocaine could affect the heart heavily. Cardiovascular diseases such as enlargement of the heart can be the result of drug abuse together with high blood pressure, and an overworked heart. Overuse of illegal drugs can cause the heart to go into cardiac arrest in some cases.
Liver/Kidney
Commonly associated when talking about the effects of alcohol addiction, the liver and kidney are important organs to ensure that the body filters out the right things it needs. Unhealthy kidneys and livers can be toxic to the body and can increase the risk of cancer, diabetes, and other nutrient-related diseases. Aside from alcohol, pharmaceutical drug overdose can also result to an unhealthy kidney.
Immune System
STDs or Sexually Transmitted Diseases such as HIV/ AIDS are usually attributed also to drug abuse. Together with Hepatitis and other more infectious diseases, STDs target the immune system of the body ultimately bringing it down making you vulnerable to any type of disease. Injected drugs are the common suspects of these diseases and the spreading of illnesses are often rooted to poor judgment caused by heavy drugs also.
Brain
Last but not the least, one of the most heavily affected parts of the body when abusing drugs is the brain. No matter what kind of addiction that is, the brain more often than not would be the one to receive the damage of it. Mental effects and diseases such as depression, aggression, and hallucinations can be triggered by addiction, and these diseases themselves can also trigger one another making a drugged brain really susceptible to damage and leaving it in dire need of addiction treatments.
